Re: Justin Martyr, First Apology, Ch. 36-43
by John Weicher
We had a very good class today, thanks to Justin. He quotes Isaiah and Psalms again and again, including virtually the whole text of Psalms 1 and 2, in the same chapter as if they were one document; he quotes quite a bit of Psalm 96 but adds the phrase "from the tree" to "The Lord reigneth," and that led to a discovery that apparently the early church fathers thought "from the tree" was part of the original text that the rabbis deleted after Jesus' crucifixion. Justin is apparently followed by Tertullian and Augustine on this, though now I can't find the references. Then he turned Alice's Axion on its head, and finished up by scoffing at predestination. I was startled to notice this afternoon that he's venerated by the Lutheran church - he certainly doesn't believe in sola fide. Despite Daylight Saving Time, we had 5 in class - Beth came back, plus Dottie, Ellen, and Alice (to explain her axiom). Betsy couldn't make it - we saw her in church afterwards. Beth will miss the next couple of weeks, but we're still going. Chapters 44-50 next week - more about the cross.
